Over time, the natural choice for most companies was to replace DMAA by using 2-aminoisoheptane, or DMHA. Unfortunately, everything indicates that 2022 will bring further changes in this respect. Why? Because DMHA is set to be banned in the United States. What is worth knowing about the upcoming changes?
Why has DMHA become the natural alternative to DMAA?
The introduction of methylhexanamine, or DMAA, into the dietary supplement market has been widely publicised. The exceptionally effective action of this substance caused it to gain a large group of supporters in a short time. For some time, it was even used by professional athletes. However, this did not last long as WADA and other anti-doping organisations found that DMAA could give athletes an unfair advantage. Because of this, methylhexanamine was banned from professional sports. Shortly after that, regulatory bodies enacted strict regulations on the manufacture and marketing of supplements containing DMAA. Such changes prompted many manufacturers to abandon the use of DMAA.
However, the void left by methylhexanamine was quickly replaced by a compound referred to as 2-aminoisoheptane, or DMHA. Of course, this choice was no accident. Studies have shown that the effects of DMAA and DMHA on the human body are quite similar. The critical difference concerned only the intensity of this effect. DMHA did not affect the body so intensively, which forced manufacturers to use higher doses of this compound. But, on the other hand, DMHA did not cause some of the side effects when using DMAA. DMAA ban from 2022!
DMHA’s good streak continued until 2019. Nevertheless, that’s when the US FDA released a warning about potential side effects from DMHA use. This was a result of the few reports reported by people who were supposed to be taking 2-aminoisoheptane. It didn’t take long for manufacturers to react, as they challenged the FDA warning. This allowed them to safely and legally produce supplements containing this compound for months to come. It seemed, therefore, that the whole matter would end only with a considerable media hype. However, this is not the case.
Subsequent actions taken by the FDA have had much more severe consequences. First, it was officially announced that from 2022 companies operating in the United States will not be able to produce and sell dietary supplements containing 2-aminoisoheptane. This ban also applies to factories located in the US, which will not legally produce this compound.
The described ban is to come into force from the beginning of 2022. Theoretically, manufacturers of dietary supplements can still object to the decision. Unfortunately, the chances of the ban being cancelled are slim to none. Thus, all supporters of DMHA use must consider the upcoming problems with the availability of this compound.
How will the new ban affect the dietary supplement market?
This decision will undoubtedly upset many people involved in strength sports. After all, DMHA has been one of the key ingredients in many dietary supplements in recent years. It was a compound present in numerous pre-workout supplements, which were supposed to increase energy and muscle pump effects simultaneously. However, US manufacturers of dietary supplements will now have two options. Either they will stop making supplements containing DMHA, or they will reformulate their formulations. However, the latter alternative will necessitate finding a substitute for DMHA.
This, in turn, will also affect the market availability of supplements containing 2-aminoisoheptane. Of course, preparations with DMHA will not disappear entirely because some manufacturers operate in countries where it is still legal to produce this compound. However, one must bear in mind that the availability of such supplements will be much lower.
